ISTJ Careers

Your choice of career is probably the most important decision you will ever make. Knowing your personality can help you find the right career, using two types of list:

This page contains a list of ISTJ careers. If you want to obtain a personal list of careers, please complete our career test. It produces your personality type and a unique profile. This enables us to produce a personal Careers Report, which contains both types of list.

Career Test

Are you an ISTJ?

A personality type, such as ISTJ, is a stereotype (Jung 1921, p. 405). No two ISTJs are the same, because you are a unique individual (Jung 1921, p. 516). As an analogy, if you say "I am an ISTJ", it is like saying "I live in Birmingham". This gives an approximate indication of where you live, but your home is not in exactly the same location as everyone else. Therefore, by saying "I am an ISTJ", you are saying that ISTJ is the closest stereotype to your unique personality.

If your closest personality type is ISTJ then you are interested in clarity and knowledge. You like to observe and listen, and have a particular interest in facts and information which help you to develop as clear a knowledge as possible. You like to know where you stand, e.g.: having clear goals to which you are working, and to know that what you are expected to do is achievable. You value your experience, which serves as a strong guide to your decisions.

ISTJ career themes

If your personality type is ISTJ, then the types of career you will tend to enjoy will involve:

  • thinking about ideas and information (Introversion)
  • dealing with facts and tangible outcomes (Sensing)
  • making decisions using objective logic (Thinking)
  • using a well-defined and structured workstyle (Judgement)

Your unique balance of preferences

These preferences do not tell the whole story, however, because you are a unique individual. For example, if one ISTJ likes to spend 55% of their time introverting and another ISTJ likes to spend 95% of their time introverting, the types of jobs they enjoy are very different.

For example, compare being a lighthouse keeper with working in an administration office. Both are introvert jobs, but the job of lighthouse keeper is much more isolated. To find the right career for you, you need a job that matches your personal balance of preferences, and not just your personality type code.

ISTJ careers

This list of ISTJ careers uses an industry-standard statistic (called "selection ratio") to show which careers ISTJs choose most often. Please bear in mind that people sometimes choose careers for reasons other than enjoyment - e.g., for financial or practical reasons.

Also, the careers that other ISTJs choose may not suit you, because you have a unique balance of preferences. The Careers Report matches your unique profile with 112 careers. It also shows which careers have the highest ratings for enjoyment.
