A brief historical perspectiveWhen we refer to "personality types", we are usually describing the 16 types created by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, and described by the use of a four letter code - eg: ESFP or INTJ.The original concept of personality types began 2,500 years ago with the creation of four personality types by early philosophers. In the early 1900s, Carl Jung drew the work of 19th century psychologists together with his own experience (with patients) to form his theory of Psychological Types. This system had 8 types. Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers expanded on 'overlooked implications' of Jung's theory, during the middle of the 20th century, to further subdivide the types into 16. It is the latter system of 16 that is most usually regarded as modern-day "personality types". Return to personality types presentation. |
